Following the inconclusive December 1995 election (Refah 21.4%, ANAP 19.6%, DYP 19.2%) and a failed ANAP-DYP coalition, Çiller's DYP entered a coalition under Necmettin Erbakan's Islamist Refah Partisi as PM from 28 June 1996, with Çiller as Deputy PM / Foreign Minister. Coalition ended February 1997 following the "post-modern coup" military memorandum.
