Investigative journalist Jan Kuciak (Aktuality.sk) and fiancee Martina Kusnirova assassinated 21 Feb 2018. Kuciak had been investigating Italian 'Ndrangheta settlement in eastern Slovakia, VAT-fraud networks, and links to Smer officials. Businessman Marian Kocner identified as ordering murder; later convicted (Kuciak case upheld 2023). Triggered 'For a Decent Slovakia' mass protests forcing Fico to resign 15 Mar 2018 and Interior Minister Kalinak earlier.
