Terrorist seizure of School Number One in Beslan, North Ossetia, by Chechen-linked militants on 1 September 2004. Three-day siege ended 3 September with over 330 hostages killed (including 186 children). Putin used the event to justify the December 2004 abolition of direct gubernatorial elections.
